Future Plans
The main event in the coming year will be the reopening of Yorkshire Museum. Our ambition is that it attracts 150,000 visitors which will be a doubling of the current visitor figures. The partnership with the British Museum is a great asset to us and we hope to work with them for the benefit of both organisations in the coming years.
We are also working with Welcome to Yorkshire to promote the Yorkshire Museum as a new attraction to the city and region. The increased number of local residents visiting the museum is key to its continued success as well as positive word of mouth feedback to friends and visitors. To this end we are inviting York residents to visit the Yorkshire Museum before it opens to the public on 1 August, Yorkshire Day. This special invite is being organised with the Local Link magazine which is delivered free to all households in the city.
At York Castle Museum we are planning to improve the Concourse adding to the new ramp installed this year and repositioning the café and shop. This should be a great improvement for vistors as well as increasing the visibility of the museum from the carpark and Cliffords Tower.
At York Art Gallery we have funding from the DCMS/Wolfson fund to improve the Burton Gallery which is on the first floor. Once this is refurbished than the York Art Gallery will have had all the galleries improved. However there are plans to increase the public and display space by bringing into use within the available footprint and we will be doing some work to see how this might work and how much it will cost.
